Clippers at Thunder Pregame: Short-Handed LAC Walks Into OKC’s TO Trap

Clipper Nation Insider pick: Thunder 114, Clippers 103
Sunday, Oct. 25, 2026 — 4:00 PM PT / 6:00 PM CDT — Paycom Center, Oklahoma City

The Clippers are 1-1 with a real offense and a broken handle. Oklahoma City is 2-0 with a defense that just turned Denver over 22 times. Tip is 4 PM PT at Paycom Center, and the mismatch is not mysterious: five Clippers rotation pieces are out, Los Angeles is already at 44 turnovers through two games, and the Thunder live in the passing lanes. CNI's pick stays honest — Thunder 114, Clippers 103 — unless the Clippers change the possession profile before the third quarter writes the same film again.

The matchup

Records through Saturday: Clippers 1-1 (W 121-96 vs. Sacramento on Oct. 21; L 117-125 at the Lakers on Oct. 23). Thunder 2-0 (W 116-104 at San Antonio on Oct. 20; W 96-84 vs. Denver on Oct. 22). Official tip per NBA.com: 4:00 PM PDT / 6:00 PM CDT at Paycom Center.

The storyline is not whether the Clippers can shoot. They already proved they can — 119.0 points per game, 50.9% from the field, 41.7% from three through two nights per Basketball-Reference. The storyline is whether a short-handed offense that has gifted 44 empty possessions can survive a Thunder defense averaging 10.0 steals and 9.5 blocks, holding opponents to 94.0 points per game (1st) with a 95.9 defensive rating (2nd) at a deliberate 98.0 pace (25th).

Denver was the stress test OKC just passed. On Thursday the Thunder forced 22 Nuggets turnovers, posted 12 steals and 9 blocks, and won 96-84. The Clippers' own tape already answers part of the question: 18 turnovers in a blowout over Sacramento, then 26 against the Lakers with 33 points the other way. Put that rate into Cason Wallace, Ajay Mitchell, and Chet Holmgren's length, and the third does not need a script.

Injury impact

Afternoon official sheet used: Injury-Report_2026-10-25_03_00PM.pdf (newer than the 6 AM PT report).

Clippers OUT: Bradley Beal (Management — Right Knee Injury), Brandon Ingram (Right Heel Surgery), Jordan Miller (Left Rotator Cuff Surgery), Yanic Konan Niederhäuser (Right Lisfranc Surgery), Max Strus (Right Plantar Fascia Tear). Five names. That is half a rotation, not a depth-chart trim.

Thunder OUT (afternoon sheet): Nolan Sorber (Right Knee Surgery), Nikola Topić (Low Back Surgery). Morning sheets also listed Oweh Out — Not With Team; he is not on the 1:45 PM or 3:00 PM ET LAC@OKC rows. This preview follows the afternoon official listing.

The asymmetry matters. Oklahoma City's absences do not gut the pressure package that buried Denver. Los Angeles is missing creation, spacing, and wing defense that would normally blunt Wallace and help on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Tyronn Lue's margin was already slim. At Paycom, with five out, it is thinner still.

Clippers through two games

Offense travels. Darius Garland is at 28.0 points per game. Brook Lopez, off the bench, is at 19.5 points on 71.4% shooting in 23.5 minutes (17 and 11 vs. Sacramento; 22 on 8-of-9 in roughly 20 minutes vs. the Lakers). Rookie Keaton Wagler: 14.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 45.5% from three. Kris Dunn: 6.0 assists and 2.5 steals. Half-court stretches with Lopez spacing and Garland attacking the floater look functional.

The handle does not. Forty-four turnovers in two games — 22.0 per game. Garland alone has 12 (6.0 per game), including nine in 36:34 against the Lakers. Wagler had four of his own in that loss. Against Sacramento, 18 giveaways still produced 23 Kings points off turnovers and were survivable. Against the Lakers, 26 giveaways decided a game the Clippers shot well enough to win. Against OKC, that rate is a gift certificate.

Isaiah Jackson has started both games at center; Lopez has been the more efficient big by a wide margin. Dunn's playmaking and steals travel. The structural problems sit on the other side: too much on-ball load on Garland, too few Lopez minutes relative to production, and too many live-ball turnovers that become paint and transition points.

OKC's defensive pressure

Through two games the Thunder are not daring you to shoot — they are daring you to put the ball on the floor in traffic. Pace 98.0 (25th). Defensive rating 95.9 (2nd). Opponent points 94.0 (1st). Team averages: 10.0 steals, 9.5 blocks. Holmgren: 4.0 blocks, 12.0 rebounds, 13.0 points. SGA: 24.5 points. The Denver box is the clearest single-game warning: 22 forced turnovers, 12 steals, 9 blocks, W 96-84.

Wallace and Mitchell feast on careless handles. Holmgren turns mid-paint drives into empty possessions or the other team's transition. SGA does not need 40 if the Clippers keep handing him early offense. Oklahoma City wins by making you play their game — short possessions, contested paint, and a scoreboard that never opens enough for a late shooting surge to matter.

What must happen for LAC

You do not "compete harder" against this defense. You change the possession profile.

  1. Turnover ceiling under 14. At 22 per game, another 30-plus points off turnovers and Holmgren and Wallace bury the night before the fourth.
  2. Lopez minutes: target 28–32. He has been the Clippers' most efficient player. Against Chet, you need his contest and spacing for more than a 20-minute spark.
  3. Cut Garland's handle tax. Shorter on-ball stretches; more catch-and-shoot after Dunn or secondary initiators start the action. Ceiling Sunday: four turnovers or fewer.
  4. Dunn as primary POA on SGA. Help on drives is fine; gambling rotations that leave Holmgren alone at the rim are not.
  5. Bench roles, verified. Wagler as cutter and spacer first. Keep feeding Lopez as the bench's gravitational center so the offense does not die when Garland sits.

Success bar: keep the third within five; win or stay even in the paint; Lopez at 24-plus minutes; Garland at four turnovers or fewer. Check those boxes and Los Angeles can leave with a competitive road loss or a steal. Miss them and the film session writes itself.

CNI score prediction

Thunder 114, Clippers 103.

Rationale in one line: five out into elite turnover pressure. The Clippers' shooting (119 ppg, 41.7% from three) is real enough to keep a game in the teens for stretches. It is not real enough to overcome another 20-plus turnover night against a home Thunder defense that just forced 22 from Denver and sits first in opponent points allowed. SGA at 24-plus, Holmgren as the rim wall, and live-ball chaos in the third is the base case. A Clippers win requires a dramatic cut in giveaways and Lopez-heavy minutes — possible, not the projection. Do not force a Clippers cover. Ball security decides it.

(Pick already live on X: Thunder 114, Clippers 103.)

What's next

Sunday at Oklahoma City, then the Lakers rematch at Intuit Dome on Wednesday. Emirates NBA Cup Group Play opens Friday, Oct. 30 at Minnesota — West Group B with OKC, Minnesota, Memphis, and New Orleans. The handle problem does not wait for Cup night. Fix it at Paycom, or the same empty possessions follow the roster into Target Center six nights later.

The shooting will travel. The question, again, is whether the ball does.
