The Emirates NBA Cup does not wait for a roster to finish healing. Group Play opens Friday, Oct. 30 — six nights after the Clippers' 1-1 start — and the draw already tells you the difficulty: West Group B is Oklahoma City, Minnesota, Memphis, New Orleans, and Los Angeles. Four games. Real standings. No soft landing.
Here is the verified format, the Clippers' Cup slate, the injury window that matters, and a concrete prediction — group finish, advance yes or no, and how far.
West Group B, locked in
The groups were drawn June 30 from 2025-26 regular-season pots. Per NBA.com's Emirates NBA Cup 101 and the official groups release, West Group B is Oklahoma City, Minnesota, the Clippers, New Orleans, and Memphis.
Each team plays the other four once — two home, two road — on Cup Nights between Oct. 30 and Nov. 27. Standings are Group Play record only. The six group winners advance, plus one wild card per conference (best second-place Group Play record in each conference). Knockouts are single-elimination: quarterfinals Dec. 4–5 and semifinals Dec. 8–9 at the higher seed's arena; championship Friday, Dec. 11 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis (does not count toward the regular-season record; everything else in the Cup does).
Tiebreakers inside a group: head-to-head in Group Play, then point differential (OT scoring excluded), then total points scored (OT excluded), then 2025-26 regular-season record, then a random draw if still tied.
Clippers Cup schedule (verified)
From the NBA.com Clippers schedule and the official Group Play slate:
- Fri., Oct. 30 — at Minnesota, 5 PM PT, Target Center
- Fri., Nov. 13 — vs. Oklahoma City, 7:30 PM PT, Intuit Dome
- Wed., Nov. 25 — at Memphis, 5 PM PT, FedExForum
- Fri., Nov. 27 — vs. New Orleans, 6:30 PM PT, Intuit Dome
Two on the road against Minnesota and Memphis. Two at Intuit Dome against Oklahoma City and New Orleans. The Thunder and Wolves are the mountain. The Grizzlies and Pelicans are the must-collects.
Backdrop through two games
Context only: the Clippers are 1-1 after beating Sacramento 121-96 and losing to the Lakers 125-117. The offense has been real — 119.0 ppg, 50.9% FG, 41.7% from three through two games per Basketball-Reference. Darius Garland is producing. Brook Lopez has been the best Clipper off the bench. The problem that travels into Cup nights is the handle: 44 turnovers in two games, including 26 against the Lakers and 33 points the other way off those giveaways. Cup Nights are concentrated and often decided by empty possessions. That is the warning label.
Injury window into Group Play
As of the Oct. 23 official injury report and subsequent reporting, still out: Bradley Beal (right knee injury management), Brandon Ingram (right heel surgery), Max Strus (right plantar fascia), Jordan Miller (left rotator cuff surgery), and Yanic Konan Niederhäuser (right Lisfranc / foot). Multiple outlets have Beal, Ingram, Strus, and Niederhäuser listed as expected out until at least around Nov. 8 — so the Oct. 30 opener at Minnesota is almost certainly still short-handed, while Nov. 13 vs. Oklahoma City sits on the edge of a possible return window. Miller is longer-term. None of that is a guarantee of availability; it is the public timetable as of late October.
How Cup basketball exposes this roster
Group Play rewards low live-ball turnover rates, contested paint defense without gambling help, and bench spacing that survives star rests — with point differential as a silent tiebreaker. The current Clippers shoot it well and secure it poorly. Lopez's vertical spacing and rim contests are Cup assets. Kris Dunn's on-ball defense is a Cup asset. Garland's scoring is a Cup asset if the handle tax drops. The liability is the same one that cost them the Lakers game: putting the ball on the floor in traffic, then watching the other team run. Against Oklahoma City's pressure and Minnesota's length, that profile loses Group Play games even when the shooting looks fine.
The prediction
Group finish: 2nd in West Group B (2–2).
Advance: Yes — West wild card.
Ceiling: Quarterfinals. Exit there.
Why not the group title: Oklahoma City is the clear favorite to take West Group B. Even at Intuit Dome on Nov. 13, a short-handed or half-healthy Clippers side is an underdog against that defense. Minnesota at Target Center on Oct. 30 is another likely loss if Beal, Ingram, and Strus are still out. Base case: 0–2 before the softer stretch.
Why 2–2 still happens: Memphis on the road (Nov. 25) and New Orleans at home (Nov. 27) are winnable once the rotation thickens. Those are the collect nights. A split of the hard two and a sweep of the softer two is the realistic floor for a wild-card push. Going 3–1 requires stealing Minnesota or Oklahoma City — possible with Lopez-heavy minutes and a cleaned-up Garland handle, not the base case.
Why they advance as wild card: The West wild card is the best second-place Group Play record among West Groups A, B, and C. A 2–2 second place with healthy point differential from the Memphis and New Orleans wins can hold up if other West runners-up are also 2–2. It is not automatic. It is the most likely path that does not require winning the group over OKC.
Why they stop in the quarterfinals: Knockouts are single-elimination at the higher seed's building. A West wild card typically draws a tough QF host. Even if the Clippers are healthier by early December, this roster's Cup identity through November is still "can score, must protect the ball." That beats middle-tier Group Play opponents. It does not survive a clean knockout night against a group winner. Semifinals would require an upset and a possession profile they have not shown yet. Championship talk is noise until the handle is fixed.
What has to be true
- Win the soft two. Drop Memphis or New Orleans and the wild-card path collapses into a 1–3 or weak 2–2 chase.
- Lopez minutes climb in Cup games. He has been the Clippers' most efficient player through two nights. Target the 28–32 minute band.
- Garland's turnover ceiling drops. Nine against the Lakers cannot be the Cup sample. Dunn and secondary initiators must take on-ball load.
- Health arrives by mid-November. If Beal and Ingram are still unavailable for Nov. 13 and Nov. 25, revise the advance call downward.
Bottom line
West Group B is real. The Clippers will not win it. They can finish second at 2–2, punch the West wild card, and take a quarterfinal date in early December — then run into a group winner that punishes the same empty possessions that already cost them a game in Los Angeles. Fix the ball before Oct. 30 and the floor rises. Keep turning it over and the Cup is four nationally watched reminders of the same problem.
The shooting will travel. The question is whether the handle does.
