Clippers vs Lakers Rematch Preview: Rest Gap Meets Turnover Tax

Clipper Nation Insider pick: Clippers 118, Lakers 114
Wednesday, Oct. 28, 2026 · 7:30 PM PT · Intuit Dome, Inglewood

Five nights after the Clippers shot well enough to win and still lost 125-117 at Crypto.com Arena, the rematch lands at Intuit Dome with a clean schedule split. Los Angeles (Clippers) has not played since Sunday's 108-101 loss at Oklahoma City. That is two full days of rest. The Lakers host Portland on Tuesday night, then tip again Wednesday: night two of their first back-to-back of the season. The rest gap is real. So is the turnover tax that has already cost this short-handed Clippers group two games they shot well enough to steal. CNI's base case is Clippers 118, Lakers 114, contingent on the handle finally dropping under 16 giveaways on the home floor.

The rematch setup

Tip is 7:30 PM PT at Intuit Dome per NBA.com and the arena schedule. Records entering Tuesday: Clippers 1-2; Lakers 3-0 and averaging 128.0 points per game through three (Basketball-Reference). The Lakers' first three: 127-105 over Golden State, 125-117 over the Clippers, 132-123 at Utah. Portland on Tuesday is game four and the front end of the B2B into Inglewood.

Friday's box is still the scouting report. Official scorer's report: Clippers 26 turnovers for 33 Lakers points; Clippers 16-of-37 from three; paint 58-48 Lakers (29-of-37 inside for LAL, 24-of-41 for LAC). Brook Lopez went 22 on 8-of-9 in 19:50 off the bench. Darius Garland had 26 points, six assists, and nine turnovers in 36:34. Austin Reaves (28) and Walker Kessler (22, six blocks) carried a Lakers night when Luka Dončić still scored 23 with a career-high 11 turnovers of his own. The Clippers can score with this Lakers group. They cannot donate another 26 empty possessions and expect a different ending.

Rest gap vs. the TO tax

Through three games the Clippers have 70 turnovers and have allowed 94 opponent points off those giveaways. Share of opponent scoring that came off Clippers turnovers: about 24% against Sacramento (23 of 96), 26.4% against the Lakers (33 of 125), and 35.2% against Oklahoma City (38 of 108). That is not a Friday fluke. That is a possession profile.

Advanced sheet through three (NBA.com Teams Advanced, as of the Monday check-in): Clippers net rating +3.2, effective field-goal percentage 58.3%, turnover rate 22.7%. They are a competitive, short-handed team that shoots like a playoff outfit and handles the ball like a summer-league club. Two days of rest does not invent a cleaner handle. It does give Tyronn Lue's group fresher legs against a Lakers roster that will have played Tuesday night and then crossed town for a 7:30 tip.

The Lakers' offense does not need introducing. 128.0 PPG, 3-0, Dončić at 34.3 points per game through three with a 52-point night at Utah. Rest helps the Clippers contest that pace. It does not erase Kessler at the rim or Reaves cooking when the Clippers' live-ball turnovers become early offense the other way.

Injury context: still five out

The inactive core has not changed through the first week. Expect the same five out unless the official Wednesday sheet flips a name:

  • Bradley Beal: right knee (injury management)

  • Brandon Ingram: right foot / heel surgery

  • Max Strus: right foot / plantar fascia tear

  • Jordan Miller: left shoulder / rotator cuff surgery

  • Yanic Konan Niederhäuser: right foot / Lisfranc surgery

That is half a rotation, not a depth-chart trim. Garland is carrying the creation load at about 24.0 points per game through three (30, 26, 16). Lopez remains the most efficient big on the roster. Kris Dunn is the point-of-attack glue. Keaton Wagler and the Gradey Dick / Kobe Sanders minutes are secondary creation that is real enough to keep games in the teens, not real enough to paper over another 20-plus turnover night.

What must change from Friday

You do not "want it more" against a 3-0 Lakers team averaging 128. You change the possession profile and use the rest.

  1. Turnover ceiling under 16. Friday was 26 for 33 points. Sunday at OKC was 26 for 38. Home rematch with rest only matters if the empty possessions stop.

  2. Garland handle tax: four turnovers or fewer. Nine at Crypto, six at Paycom. Shorter on-ball stretches; more Dunn and Sanders initiation so Garland can play off the catch.

  3. Lopez minutes: 28-plus. Twenty-two points on 8-of-9 in under 20 minutes is a spark, not a plan. Against Kessler, you need the vertical spacer for more than a quarter-and-a-half.

  4. Win or stay even in the paint. Friday was minus-10 (58-48). Sunday was minus-28. Intuit Dome has to flip that column or the rematch ends like the first meeting.

  5. Third-quarter discipline. Friday's third was 39-26 Lakers. Live-ball turnovers into Kessler and Reaves in that window wrote the loss before the fourth tightened it.

Success bar: under 16 turnovers; Lopez at 28-plus minutes; paint even or better; Garland at four turnovers or fewer. Clear three of those four and the rest gap is enough to steal a home win. Miss them and Friday's film runs again with different jerseys on the home side.

CNI score prediction

Clippers 118, Lakers 114.

Rationale in one line: rest plus home against a Lakers group on night two of a B2B is a real edge, but only if the TO tax finally drops. The Clippers' shooting (58.3 eFG% through three) and Lopez's efficiency travel. The Lakers' 128.0 PPG and Dončić/Reaves creation travel too. Base case is a competitive Intuit Dome game that flips Friday if Los Angeles (Clippers) keeps turnovers under 16 and feeds Lopez. If the handle stays in the mid-20s, take the Lakers regardless of rest. Do not force a blowout either way. Ball security and the third quarter decide it.

What's next

Wednesday's rematch, then Emirates NBA Cup Group Play opens Friday, Oct. 30 at Minnesota (West Group B with OKC, Minnesota, Memphis, and New Orleans). The handle problem does not wait for Cup night. Fix it at Intuit Dome, or the same empty possessions follow the roster into Target Center two nights later.

The rest gap is the Clippers' opening. The turnover tax is still the bill. Pay one down and cash the other, or Wednesday looks like Friday with better seats.
